DAXXIFY – It’s Finally Here

January of 2000 was the first time I injected Botox (Allergan’s blockbuster facial wrinkle stopper) into myself and my patients. Everyone loved it. In fact it was so popular and sought after that I began referring to it as “cosmetic crack.” It had a gradual onset of action, lasted about 3 months on average, and then wore off quickly. Over these past two decades three other competing botulinum toxin-A (BTA) products were brought to us by other companies from other countries. All four of these products are harvested from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. The way they are derived from the bacteria are different. The way they are prepared for medical and aesthetic use are different. The way they work at our motor nerve endings is identical.
Do you know what the most common complaint is that I have heard about all of these products over all of these years? “Dr. Carter, why can’t they last longer?” These first four products all last an average of 3-4 months in people when used for relaxing facial expression muscles. You see, they are all formulated in much the same way as each other. The active portion of the BTA for each of these four competitors is identical.
For almost three years I have been hearing in the aesthetic industry that there would be coming a BTA product that would last TWICE as long on average as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeaveau. So, I have been eagerly waiting, and waiting, and waiting. And now it is here! It is called Daxxify. It is brought to us by an American company named Revance. Daxxify received full FDA approval September 8, 2022. It is formulated differently. It contains a 35 amino acid peptide that significantly increases the affinity and the uptake of the BTA into the motor nerve ending. I have had it in my office since Tuesday December 13. You see, I qualified to be one of the initial 1% of U.S. injectors to be able to obtain Daxxify two months earlier than the rest of my BTA injecting colleagues. The rest of the injectors will be able to purchase Daxxify this coming March.
